Canty Named New England DIII Champion

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's sophomore William Canty (South Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) was named the New England Division III Champion after winning six of 10 events in the men's track and field decathlon at the New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by MIT on May 3-5.

Canty set a school record in the decathlon after totaling 6,356 points.

Of the ten events, Canty won the 100-meter race (11.42), the long jump (6.29m; 20' 7 ¾), the 400-meter race (50.91), the 110-meter hurdles (16.07), the pole vault (4.20m; 13' 9 ¼), and the 1500-meter race (4:52.45).

Junior Esteafan Jack (Boston, Mass. / Lincoln Sudbury) and senior David Drigo (Middleton, Mass. / Masconomet) both earned All-New England Division III All-Region Honors after placing within the top eight in their respective events.

Jack placed fifth in the 400-meters (50.10) while Drigo also placed fifth in the javelin (60.47m; 198' 5").

The Owls' 4x400-meter relay team of junior Connor Gottzmann (Longmeadow, Mass.), freshman Bobby Gardner (Lunenburg, Mass.), junior Dorian Johnson (Reading, Mass. / Reading Memorial), and Jack also earned New England Honors after finishing seventh (3:22.61).

Westfield State placed 13th (of 30) as a team with a total of 20 points. UMass Dartmouth placed first (64), Middlebury followed in second (62.5) and Tufts finished third (60).

Westfield State will travel to Hanover, NH on May 11-12 for the NEICAAA Championships.
