WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's sophomore William Canty (South Grafton / Grafton), junior Connor Gottzmann (Longmeadow, Mass.), and sophomore Brandon Leclair (Goshen, Conn. / Wamogo) each placed first in their events to lead the men's indoor track team at the Rhode Island College Holiday Classic held at the Providence Career & Technical Academy on Saturday.

Canty placed first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.71), Gottzmann placed first in the 800-meter run (2:05.62) while Leclair finished first in the 5,000-meter run (15:54.41).

The Owls 4x400 relay team of Patrick Brett (Hanson / Whitman-Hanson), Colin Ferreira (Wilbraham / Minnechaug Regional High School), Zac Bentley (Acushnet / Taunton) and Tim Forrest (Grafton / Westborough) placed second in a time of 8:50.02.

Other top competitors for the Owls includes Mitchel Maslowski (Berlin, Conn.) who placed second in the 60-meter dash (7.21) and second in the 200-meter dash (23.29), Dorian Johnson (Reading / Reading Memorial) who finished second in the 400-meter dash (51.56), Ferreira who placed second in the 800-meter run (2:06.46), Zac Bentley (Acushnet / Taunton) who placed second in the 1,000-meter run (2:40.49), Riley Moore (Holden / Wachusett Regional) who finished second in the pole vault (3.96; 12-11.75), and finally Forrest who placed second in the 5,000-meter run (15:59.25).

No team scoring was kept at the season-opening meet.

Westfield State will travel to Springfield College as they compete in the Maroon and White Classic meet on January 20th.
