Colonials Stop Men's Soccer, 4-0

DANBURY, CT – Junior forward Mikey Sciortino (Shelton, CT) tallied three goals while classmate Matthew Restrepo (Bridgeport, CT) finished with one goal and an assist to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout victory over visiting non-conference opponent Westfield State University on Tuesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex. With the win, the Colonials improved to 6-1 overall while the Owls dropped to 1-3.

The shots were fairly close as the Colonials finished with a 14-10 edge. However, the hosts managed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.

They drew first blood when rookie forward Franz Muhaj (Bridgeport, CT) blasted a shot that was turned aside by a diving Tyler Diotalevi (Ludlow, MA). However, the Westfield netminder could not corral the rebound and Restrepo booted it into the back of the net in the 8th minute of play.

Shortly thereafter, Restrepo found a streaking Sciortino for a breakaway scoring strike, extending the Colonials' lead to 2-0. They would hold the lead at the break.

Sciortino buried his second goal of the game when Muhaj lined a cross from just outside the right corner of the box which found his foot in the 54th minute. Moments later, Diotalevi committed a foul, setting up Sciortino for the penalty kick which he booted into the top-left corner, rounding the count out at 4-0.

The Colonials return to action for their league opener against visiting Little East Conference foe Southern Maine on Saturday at Noon.  Westfield will be back in action on Saturday, opening the 2019 MASCAC slate with a 1 p.m. match at Salem State.
