Ice Hockey Ties Framingham, 2-2

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State ice hockey team tied Framingham State 2-2 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game from Loring Arena in Framingham, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.

With the tie, the Owls hold a 9-12-2 overall record and a 5-10-1 mark in conference play. The Rams are now 5-16-2 on the season and 3-12-2 in MASCAC action.

After a scoreless first period, the Owls scored the first goal of the contest just under three minutes into the second period when Mathieu Jones (Gatineau, Quebec) finished off a setup from Brett Williams (Middleboro, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead.

The Owls doubled their lead midway through the second with Cullen Young (Maynard, Mass.) scoring off a pass from Colin Roe (Boston, Mass.).

Two minutes and forty-two seconds later, Framingham cut the deifict in half as Elijah Slagter (Wilmar, MN) found the back of the net after a feed from Sam Larkin (Douglas, Mass.).

The Rams appeared to have tied the game near the end of the second, but the goal was waived off for incidental contact with Owls goalkeeper Valtteri Valtonen (Helsinki, Finland). However, thirty seconds after the stoppage, Matt Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) tucked the puck inside the right post for the equalizer.

After a scoreless third period, the two teams went into extra time where both teams had power play opportunities to end the game with a victory, but neither team was able to find the back of the net as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Valtonen and Rams goalie Trevor Stenberg (Randolph, N.J.) each recorded 39 saves for their respective teams.

The Owls penalty-killing unit was busy throughout the contest, and managed to keep the Rams off the scoreboard in seven man-advantage opportunities. Westfield was unable to capitalize on three of their own power play looks as well.

Westfield State has two games remaining in the regular season with the first of two coming on the road as the Owls will travel to Fitchburg State for a MASCAC game on Thursday at 6:30 P.M., then will host UMass Dartmouth in the regular season finale at Amelia Park for senior day on Saturday.
