Lancers Top Owls at DCU Center

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Worcester State's Brian Clougherty scored one goal and assisted on two other as the Lancers held off Westfield State, 5-2 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the DCU Center in Worcester on Saturday afternoon.

The game was part of a special doubleheader with the Worcester Railers-Idaho Steelheads professional ECHL game to follow.

Worcester State rose to the occaision, getting on the scoreboard first with Shane Prifel tallying off of an assist from from Clougherty.

Westfield's Colin Roe lit the lamp three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1, but Worcester would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission with Nicholas Terry scoring with just 36 seconds left in the period.

Brigham Neuhold scored the lone goal of the second period to give Worcester State a 3-1 lead, then Clougherty tallied a short-handed goal at 7:13 of the third to build the lead to 4-1.

Westfield got one back with Cooper Board scoring on breakaway at the 8:30 mark of the third period, but the Owls could get no closer.

The Lancers got an empty netter late when Max Roth tallied with Clougherty picking up the second assist on the play.

Valtteri Valtonen made 37 saves for Westfield State, while Jake Kubik stoped 31 of 33 shots for the Lancers.

Westfield is now 5-5-1 overall and a 2-4 in the MASCAC.   Worcester State is 4-7 overall but improves to 4-2 in the MASCAC.

Westfield will be off until January 5, when they return to action with a non-conference game at Assumption College.
