Cory Morris takes face-off vs Fitchburg State

WESTFIELD, Mass.- Cory Morris (Kahnawake, Quebec) scored the lone Westfield goal in a 4-1 loss against the top seeded Fitchburg State Falcons in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference hockey game on Thursday from Amelia Park Arena in Westfield, Mass.

Westfield drops to 12-10-2 overall, and a game under .500 in conference play at 7-8-2.

Fitchburg climbs to 17-5 overall and a MASCAC leading 14-3 in divisional play.

Morris got the Owls on the board first at 11:48 in the first frame, potting his fifth goal of his sophomore campaign. His fellow linesmen Wyatt Lawrence (Sexsmith, Alberta) and Tanner Derby (Seabrook, N.H.) were credited with the assists, helping put the Owls up 1-0.

Fitchburg evened the game while on a power play at 16:36 thanks to Wyatt Wilmshurst (Massena, N.Y) one-timer from inside the near post, assisted by Rece Bergeman (Newark, Del.) and Hunter Fortin (Westerville, Ohio).

The Falcons would stretch their lead to two at 7:40 in the second period after an Owls line change found Cole Archambeault (Leominster, Mass.) and Thomas Harty (Billerica, Mass.) in a two on one situation where Archambeault was able to sneak one past Westfield's Valtteri Valtonen (Helsinki, Finland).

WSU started the third period trailing 2-1.

Harty of the visiting squad would stretch their lead even further and record his second point of the night a little over midway through the third. Zackery Diamont (Billerica, Mass.) assisted the play making it 3-1 Fitchburg.

An empty netter from Diamont in the final minute would ice the victory for the visiting Falcons.

Valtonen recorded another solid outing for the Owls, seeing 40 shots and saving 37.

Fitchburg's net-minder, Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.), allowed 1 goal on 29 shots faced.

The Owls were outshot 41 to 29.

Westfield caps off regular season play with another MASCAC test as they take on the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in a 3:00 start at Hetland Arena on Saturday. Fitchburg will return home to face Worcester State on Saturday at 4:00 P.M.
