WATERBURY, Conn. -- Daniel Backstrom (Helsinki, Finland) picked up a goal and an assist in Westfield State's 3-3 non-conference tie with Post University on Thursday night.

The Owls move to 0-2-1 on the young season, still in search of their first win.

Westfield State got things going early on the powerplay, as sophomore defenseman Triston Theriot (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored his first of the season to give the Owls an 1-0 lead early in the second period.

Post would then answer with three un-answered goals throughout the rest of the period to take a commanding 3-1 lead into the third.

But the Owls would not quit, as goals from Backstrom and Justin Alves (Woburn, Mass.) only two minutes apart would tie the game at 3-3.

After a hard battle and 81 combined shots in regulation, the game was still not settled and would move to overtime.

Westfield went on the powerplay with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth frame, but was unable to convert, ending the game in a 3-3 tie.

Senior Kameron Limburg (Howell, Mich.) saved 32 shots in his first action of the season, while Post's Brandon Brown, undoubtedly kept the Eagles in it, stopping a whopping 56 shots out of 59 on the evening.

Up next, the Owls will get back to MASCAC play and host Salem State next Thursday in a quest to avenge the conference semifinal loss last season. Puck drop is schedules for 7:35 p.m. at Amelia Park Ice Arena.
