Hounds Bite Owls With Two Late Goals

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Assumption College scored a pair of goals in the final 1:09, including the game winner from Brendan Phillipon with 19 seconds left to lift the Greyhounds to a 5-4 win over Westfield State in a non-conference men's ice hockey game at Amelia Park Ice Arena.

Westfield held s 3-2 lead heading into the third period, but Assumption (9-4) struck first in the frame when Elliott MGuire skated nerly the length of the ice unchecked and fired a shot to tie the game 3-3.

Westfield (3-4-2) regained the lead when Daniel Backstrom scored on the rebound of a David Chavis shot with 5:41 to play, giving thre Owls a 4-3 lead.

But the Greyhounds rallied late, getting a shorthanded goal from Dante Tomassini with 1:09 to play to tie the game 4-4, then getting the game winner from Phillipon on a 3-on-2 counter attack, as the puck slid to the left side to find Phillipon with an open shot at the back post.

David Zulauf made 22 saves for the Greyhounds, while Thierry Messervier stopped 25 for the Owls.

Backstrom finished with a goal and assist for Westfield State, while Marabito was credited with a goal and two assists for Assumption.

Westfield State will break for finals and the semester break.  The Owls will next be in action on January 3, hosting Becker in a 1:00 p.m. start at Amelia Park.

The Hounds will also take a break for the end of the semester, next returning to action on January 11, when they will begin a two-game set at St. Michael's College with a 7:00 p.m. start.
