Limburg, Girard Fuel 2-1 Win Over Salem

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State University sophomore goaltender Kameron Limburg (Howell, Mich.) made 39 saves to lead Westfield State to a 2-1 victory over Salem State in a MASCAC men's ice hockey game at the Amelia Park Ice Arena on Thursday night.

Limburg blanked the Vikings in the first period, stopping an 18-shot barrage in the first 20 minutes. Westfield State got on the scoreboard first with 2:59 left in the period, as Johnny Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) potted a wrister from the left side as defenseman Carl Greco (Niagara Falls, Ont.) rushed the puck into the zone and slid it across for Orlando and the 1-0 lead.

Salem finally tied the game at 1-1 3:39 into the third period, as Jimmy Currier (Middelton, Mass.) tallied in a 2-on-1 breakaway off a feed from Casey Miller(Billerica, Mass.). Salem peppered Limburg with 29 shots before finally tying the game.

Westfield got the game winner as FX Girard (St,. Lazare, Quebec) deflected a loose puck up in the air deep in the offensive zone and batted it in baseball-style with 8:16 left to play.

The Owls survived the late Salem onslaught, as the Vikings pulled goalie Jason Pucciarelli (Newmarket, Ont.) ( (27 saves) with 1:10 left in the game, and got a great scoring chance with 15 seconds to play, but again Limburg stonewalled Michael Casale (Stoney Creek, Ont.) and the Owls ran out the clock for the win.

Westfield State improves to 7-11-1 on the season and 5-8 in the MASCAC. Salem falls to 8-9-3 and 5-7-1 in the league.
