Men's Golf Picked Third in MASCAC Preseason Poll

Westfield, Mass.— Salem State has been chosen to repeat as champions at the 2022 MASCAC Men's Golf Championship as voted on by the coaches from around the league.
 
Salem State claims the top spot with six first place votes for 48 points. Reigning MASCAC Player and Rookie of the Year Ethan Doyle returns for the Vikings after shooting a 111, including a 71 on day two to help lead the team to the conference title last year.
 
Last year's runner-up Springfield is second with a first place vote for 39 points. Aidan McBride tied for sixth after shooting a two-day total of 119 (40-79) to earn a spot on the All-Conference team.
 
Up next in third is Westfield State with 37 points and the final first place vote. The Owls finished fourth as a team and will look to Brandon Smith this season. During last year's tournament, he finished tied for 17th with a two-day score of 127 (45-82).
 
Mitchell is tabbed to finish fourth with 29 points. The Mariners were third at the MASCAC Championship in 2021. Shamus McLean earned All-Conference honors after completing the two-day tourney with a total score of 119 (42-77), good enough for a tie in sixth place.
 
Sitting in fifth with 26 points is Worcester State. Returning this season is Max Joyner. At last year's championship, he collected a total score of 137 (47-90) to finish 29th overall and help the Lancers to a fifth place team finish.
 
Grabbing the sixth spot is New England College with 20 points. The Pilgrims were sixth at the Fall 2021 tournament and bring back Timothy Carlson who shot a 46 and 83 for 129 to finish tied for 22nd overall.
 
Rounding out the preseason poll in a tie for seventh are Eastern Nazarene and MCLA with 11 points, respectively. For the Trailblazers, Paul Roeder returns after leading the team with a 14th place finish, shooting 125 (42-83) over the two-day event last season. For the Lions, Matt Cawthorne was the top finisher on team with a total score of 130 (47-83) to finish in a tie for 24th.
 
Over the next few weeks, the MASCAC men's golf teams will get the 2022 season started which culminates in the MASCAC Championship on October 3-4 hosted by Mitchell at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Conn.
