Three Westfield State golfers earned All-MASCAC honors, as the Owls placed second at the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men's golf championships held at the Wachussett Country Club in West Boylston, Mass. this weekend.

Sophomore J.J. Newcombe (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone) and junior Matteo Godek (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) earned first-team honors, while sophomore Michael Waldman (Billerica, Mass.) was a second-team selection.

Newcombe fired the tournament's low round of the day on Sunday, posting a 74 to finish 78-74-152 and tie for the individual lead.   Springfield College's Mike Strong won the individual title in a 3-man playoff. Newcombe and Strong both parred the first playoff hole to eliminate Springfield's Corey Roya, and Strong claimed the tournament title and conference player-of-the-year honors when he parred the second playoff hole and Newcombe bogeyed.

Godek shot 74-79-153 to tie for fourth, while Waldman finished in a tie for 8th with 78-78-156.

Ryan Koczela (Bridgewater, Mass.)  77-84-161 and Garrett Desmond (Beverly, Mass.) 83-87-170 completed the Owls team, which finished with a team score of 307-315-622, six strokes off the pace set by tournament winner Springfield College.

The MASCAC Tournament included nine schools this season, as the league expanded to include schools from the NECC, and was played as a two day format for the first time at the hilly, 1927 Donald Ross designed course, which plays as a 6,567 yard, par 72 layout from the men's championship tees.

The Owls have completed the fall portion of their schedule.
