Westfield State Athletics Mourns Passing of Hall-of-Famer Bob Farias '68

Westfield State athletics mourns the passing of alumnus and athletic hall-of-famer Bob Farias '68 on Monday, Sept. 23, 2019 at the age of 73 after a long illness.

Farias was inducted into the Westfield State athletics hall of fame in 1996.

Bob Farias was a four-year basketball standout at Westfield State in the late 1960s. He led the team in scoring during his sophomore season, averaging 18.6 points per game, and was captain during his junior year. Farias scored more than 750 points in his WSC career and received the Presidential Basketball Award in his senior year. He also was president of the Men's Athletic Association. 

Farias' most memorable game at Westfield State came during his sophomore year when he scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Owls past American International College, 80-76, for the biggest upset victory in school history. 

An educator in the Lexington School System, Farias coached boys basketball at the school from 1976-2010, and his teams won 567 games and 18 Middlesex League titles during his tenure. His team won a state title in 1978.

Funeral from the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd., LEXINGTON, Friday, Sept. 27 at 9am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Brigid Church, Lexington at 10am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting Hours Thursday from 4pm to 8pm.
