SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England used a 17-1 run midway through the second half to take control, as the Golden Bears rallied from a one-point half time deficit to defeat Westfield State, 92-83 at the Alumni Healthful Living Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears improve to 4-5 with the win in the non-conference game between local rivals, while Westfield State is now 5-5.

Westfield used a modest 7-3 run over the final 1:18 of the first half to lead 41-40 at the intermission.

Westfield led 47-44 after junior forward Marcus Collins (Cambridge Rindge and Latin/Cambridge, Mass.) stepped out to drill a three-point shot with 17:08 to play in the game, but Western New England then embarked on a 17-1 run to take control of the game.

Cole Eibar (Herricks/Albertson, N.Y.) started the run by answering Collins' three with a jumper of his own, and Mike McGuire (Chaminade/Garden City, N.Y.) hit back to back trey's for the bears in the middle of the scoring spurt. Alex Sikorski (Rocky Hill, Conn.) capped the run with a three pointer that gave WNE a 61-48 lead with 13:06 to play.

Westfield stemmed the tide late and tried to battle back, trimming the lead down to five points at 82-77 after a Collins layup and a Ty Sands (Kennedy/Waterbury, Conn.) three with 2:15 left to play.

The Bears made six of eight free throws late to help close out the win.

Mikey Pettaway (Fairfield Prep/Bridgeport, Conn.) led five players in double figures for Western New England with 20 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. McGuire and EJ Day (McMahon/Norwalk, Conn.) each added 14.

Collins finished with a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds for Westfield, while Tray Rumley (Maloney/Meriden, Conn.) added 15 points and seven rebounds. Sands finished with 12 and Anthony Reynolds (Cathedral/Springfield, Mass.) 10 for the Owls.

Westfield State will be back in action tomorrow, hosting Pine Manor College at 1:00 p.m. at the Woodward Center.
