Westfield Set to Host MASCAC Doubleheader

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's men and women's basketball teams will face Bridgewater State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, January 13th in the Woodward Center with the women playing at 1:00 p.m. and the men following at 3:00 p.m.

Westfield State women's basketball is 7-6 on the season and 1-0 in the MASCAC. Bridgewater State's women's basketball is 4-9 on the season and 1-0 in the MASCAC.

Westfield State plays at home in the Woodward Center for the first time since December 31st.

Junior guard Lucy Barrett (Williamstown, Mass. / Mt. Greylock) leads the Owls in scoring and is second in the league at 16.1 points per game. Junior guard Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow, Mass.) scores 12.5 ppg and leads the Owls with 3.1 rebounds per game. McCarthy currently ranks third in the MASCAC with 34 steals on the season. Senior redshirt guard Alyssa Darling (Palmer, Mass.) adds 8.3 ppg, while senior center Rebecca Sapouckey (Chicopee, Mass. /Granby) nets 7.3 points per game.

Westfield State sophomore guard Chelsea Moussette (Southampton, Mass. / Hampshire Regional) scored a career-high 20 points, shooting a perfect 7-7 from the floor and 5-5 from behind the arc, with three assists, three rebounds and a steal in just 18 minutes of action in the 101-62 win over MCLA last weekend. Her 5-for-5 from behind the arc is the second-best perfect game in school history.

Bridgewater State's freshman forward Destiny Fitzgerald (Medford, Mass.) is averaging 10.0 points a game, 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game, while shooting 50.6% (45-89) from the floor. She presently ranks second in the MASCAC in field goal percentage. Senior forward/guard Rhiana Page (Brookline, Mass.) averages 8.6 points a game and 3.6 rebounds a game while junior guard Sara DaSilva (Chelmsford, Mass.) contributes 8.6 points a game and grabs 3.2 rebounds a game.
Westfield and Bridgewater played a thrilling, 97-95 game in the conference semifinals last season in the last meeting between the two teams, with Westfield State prevailing in double-overtime.

Westfield State's men's basketball team is 7-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play while Bridgewater is 8-6 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The Owl men take the court in the Woodward Center for the first time since December 10th.

On the men's side, junior forward Marcus Collins (Cambridge / Rindge & Latin) leads the Owls in scoring averaging 14.9 points per game. Collins leads the team in rebounds, averaging 5.8 a game and is ranked 3rd in the MASCAC with 9.0 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard Moody Bey (Springfield, Mass. / Monson), who scored a career high 26 points in the 104-87 victory over MCLA last Saturday, is the Owls' second leading scorer, averaging 13.4 ppg and leads the team with 2.3 steals a game. Bey is second in the MASCAC in steals, totaling 32 on the season so far.

Bridgewater State's senior forward Joseph Carty (Natick, Mass.) leads the Bears averaging 16.8 points per game and 2.1 assists a game. Carty leads the MASCAC in rebounds per game and total rebounds, averaging 11.8 a game and totaling 154 on the season. Sophomore forward Rayshon Ward (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth North) is the second leading scorer for the Bears, averaging 15.9 ppg and grabs 6.8 rebounds a game.

The two teams split their two meetings last season, each winning on their home court.
