Westfield Hosts Doubleheader Against Salem

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's men and women's basketball teams will be facing off against Salem State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, February 10th. The games will take place in the Woodward center with the women playing at 1:00 p.m. and the men playing at 3:00 p.m.

Westfield State women's basketball is 14-7 in the season and 8-1 in the MASCAC. Salem State women's basketball is 8-15 this season and 4-6 in the MASCAC. Westfield won the first meeting of the season between the two teams, 78-63.

This will be the Westfield women's first home game since January 27th, when they beat the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 78-57.
Junior guard Lucy Barrett (Williamstown, Mass. / Mt. Greylock) leads the Owls in scoring and is fourth in the league at 16.0 points per game. Junior guard Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow, Mass. / Ludlow) scores 12.6 points per game and leads the Owls with 5.1 rebounds per game. McCarthy currently ranks fifth in the MASCAC with 46 steals on the season.

Junior forward Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass. / Wareham) leads Salem State in scoring at 14.7 points per game, and leads the league with 214 rebounds so far this season. Senior guard Norma Wagget (Saugus, Mass. / Saugus) adds 11.1 points per game. She scored 44 points against the Owls at the Woodward Center last season, in a 126-77 loss to Westfield. Westfield's 126 points were a school-record.

Westfield State men's basketball is 10-12 in the season, and 4-5 in the MASCAC. Salem is 20-3 in the season and 10-0 in the MASCAC. Westfield lost to Salem in their first meeting of the season, 107-85.

This will also be the Westfield men's first home game since January 27th, when they beat the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 97-75.
For the men, junior forward Marcus Collins (Cambridge, Mass. / Rindge & Latin) leads the Owls in scoring averaging 14.9 points per game. Collins leads the team in rebounds, averaging 9.2 a game and is ranked 3rd in the MASCAC with 9.8 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard Moody Bey (Springfield, Mass. / Monson) is the Owls' second leading scorer, averaging 12.5 points per game and leads the team with 2.1 steals a game.

Senior guard Shaquan Murray (Boston, Mass. / New Mission) leads the Salem State Vikings in scoring and is second in the league at 16.6 points per game. Senior forward Drew Healy (Lowell, Mass. / Lowell) leads the Vikings, and is second in the league with 10.5 rebounds per game this season.
