WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's freshman guard Ty Sands (Waterbury, Conn. / Kennedy) has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball rookie of the week Monday.

Sands finished with 12 points, two steals, two rebounds and an assist, shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc in the Owls' 104-87 win over MCLA in the league opener.

Sands has 125 points so far this season, averaging 8.9 points and 3.1 assists a game.

The Owls are 7-7 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Westfield State will host Bridgewater State in MASCAC action on January 13^th at 3:00 p.m.
