Owls Fall to Regis College, 77-67

HARTFORD, Conn. -. Five players finished in double-figures to lead the Regis College Pride to a 77-67 victory over the Westfield State University Owls on Saturday night on the first night of the Trinity College Men's Basketball Holiday Tournament.

Regis improves to 4-4 overall while Westfield State is now 5-7 on the year.

Regis came out of the gates hot, jumping out to a 21-9 lead at the 12:07 mark thanks to a three-pointer from Jordan Seldon. Two minutes later, Dimitri Rosa nailed a triple of his own to extend the lead to 24-10 as the Pride kept Westfield State at arm's length for a majority of the half.

Westfield State's sophomore Anthony Reynolds (Springfield / Cathedral) cut the deficit to ten with 3:10 left to go in the opening frame, but a jumper by Ademola Afonja followed by an old-fashioned three-point play by Tim Broom on the following possession put the Pride back ahead by 15. The Owls trimmed the lead back to ten at the half thanks to a buzzer-beater by Reynolds.

The Pride held strong in the second half, holding a double-digit lead for all but one minute in the game's final 20 minutes. Westfield State tried to make things interesting with 7:44 left to go when a strong defensive stand that ended with a steal by sophomore Sam Traicoff (Beverly, Mass.) led to a layup at the other end of the court by sophomore Moody Bey (Springfield / Monson).

Regis responded, however, with a three-pointer by Rosa to reclaim a 13-point lead. A tough bucket by junior Marcus Collins (Cambridge / Rindge & Latin) down low with 1:39 left to play made it a 73-65 game but it was too little, too late as the Pride held on for the ten-point victory.

The Owls were led by Collins and Bey, both of whom had 17 points, while Collins also pulled down 11 boards to finish with a double-double. Reynolds added 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals while freshman Ty Sands (Waterbury, Conn. / Kennedy) accounted for Westfield State's fourth double-digit scorer with 12 points.

Regis was led by Afonja who led all players with 18 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Rosa scored 13 points off the bench for the Pride courtesy of a 3-of-6 shooting performance from beyond the arc while Seldon finished with 11 points and Broom and Jawaun Lewis each had 10 apiece.

The Pride will square off against Trinity in tomorrow's tournament championship game at 2 p.m. while the Owls face St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) in the consolation game at noon.
