Owls Extend #6 Williams, Fall 70-63

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Junior guard Bobby Casey (Scranton Prep/Scranton, Pa.) scored 21 points to lead sixth-ranked Williams College to a 70-63 win over Westfield State at the Woodward Center on Tuesday night.

Williams improves to 6-1 overall, while Westfield is now 5-4 on the season.

The Ephs grabbed a 30-22 halftime lead. Westfield held tough in the second half, never letting the larger Ephs get more than a 12-point advantage. The Owls got the lead to as few as five points on several occasions, the last on a pair of free throws from Ty Sands (Kennedy/Waterbury, Conn.) with 31 seconds to play that cut the lead to 66-61, but the Ephs made four of six free throws down the stretch to finish the game.

Westfield was led by 20 points and 11 rebounds from freshman guard Sands, while junior guard Peter Mafo (Lynn Classical/Lynn, Mass.) added 14 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Anthony Reynolds (Cathedral/Springfield, Mass.) added seven points and 11 rebounds.

Williams got 19 points in a supporting effort from James Heskett (St. Xavier/Cincinnati, Ohio). The Ephs used a size advantage inside to block seven shots on the evening, and held Westfield to 32.8 percent shooting from the floor in the game.

Westfield will be back in action this weekend, facing Western New England on the road on Saturday, and Pine Manor at home on Sunday.

Williams will next host Fitchburg State on Thursday evening.
