Owls Cruise to 90-79 Victory over St. Joseph's

Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore Moody Bey (Springfield, Mass. / Monson) and junior Marcus Collins (Cambridge / Rindge & Latin) scored 20 points each to lead the Westfield State University Owls to a 90-79 victory over the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) College Bears on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Trinity College Men's Basketball Holiday Invitational.

Westfield State improves to 6-7 on the year while the Bears fall to 5-7 overall with the loss.

Bey was named to the All-Tournament team thanks to his performance over the weekend. Against St. Joseph's, the sophomore shot 9-of-17 from the floor and finished with six rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block. Collins similarly had a dominant afternoon, pulling down seven boards and tallying three steals to go along with his 20 points. The Owls also got double-digit scoring efforts from senior Allister Williams (Boston, Mass. / Bedford) and junior Peter Mafo (Lynn / Lynn Classical) who had 17 and 12 points, respectively.

For St. Joseph's, Alec Willis and Dimitri Sirakis combined for 47 of the team's points, but the Bears turned the ball over 17 times. Willis earned All-Tournament honors after going off for 27 points, highlighted by a 6-of-7 performance from beyond the arc, and also finished with four assists and four steals. Sirakis chipped in 20 points while Stephane Etheart had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Both teams kept it close in the early part of the first half with Westfield State holding a 15-13 lead at the 12:42 mark on an elbow jump shot from Collins. The Owls rattled off ten-straight points from there to climb to a 25-13 lead before a pair of free throws by Etheart ended the run. The Owls outscored the Bears 27-14 in the final ten minutes of the opening frame as they took a 52-29 lead into the break.

St. Joseph's outscored Westfield State 50-29 in the second half but the Owls remained comfortably ahead for much of the half, save for a few minutes towards the end of the game. The Bears went on a 10-0 run with just under four minutes remaining to cut a 23-point deficit to 13. A pair of buckets from the charity stripe by Sirakis made it 87-77 with 1:42 to play, but Westfield State held steady down the stretch as Collins hit a pair of free throws with under a minute to go to ice the game.

The Owls travel to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on January 6th for their first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game of the season starting at 3:00 p.m.
