Collins, Sands Sweep MASCAC Weekly Awards

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's men's basketball team swept the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly awards Monday, with junior forward Marcus Collins (Cambridge / Rindge & Latin) earning the MASCAC player of the week and Owls' freshman guard Ty Sands (Waterbury, Conn. / Kennedy) picking up the MASCAC rookie of the week award.

Collins averaged 17.5 points, 11 rebounds and 2.5 blocks while shooting 44% (11-25) from the floor in two games this week. The junior forward had a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds plus three assists and three blocks in the 79-72 setback to Pine Manor College and scored 22 points with seven rebounds and two blocks in the 92-83 setback at Western New England University.

Sands averaged 14.3 points, seven rebounds and 2.7 assists in three games this week, scoring 20 points, pulling down 11 rebounds and dishing out three assists in the 70-63 setback to #6 Williams College. The freshman guard finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists and two steals in the 92-83 setback to Western New England University and tallied 11 points, four rebounds, an assist and steal in the 79-72 setback to Pine Manor College.

Collins leads the Owls in scoring, averaging 13.7 points a game. Sands follows in third, averaging 9.2 points a game.

The Owls wrapped up the fall semester non-conference portion of the schedule with a 5-6 overall record.

Westfield State will travel to Trinity College on December 30th and 31st for the Trinity College Holiday tournament. The Owls play Regis College on the 30th at 7:00 p.m.
