WESTFIELD, Mass. -  Jayonna Montigny's second-half goal was the difference for Mount Holyoke College, as the Lyons topped Westfield State 2-1 in a non-conference field hockey game in South Hadley on Wednesday evening.

In the 41st minute of play, Montigny slapped home the rebound of teammate Anna Induni's initial shot, which was saved by Owls goalkeeper Emma Gniadek (Worcester, Mass./Doherty), but the ball bounced out to Montigny crashing the net from the left side.

Gniadek finished with six saves, keeping the game tight throughout.

MHC took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of play with Laurissa Montigny scoring off a penalty corner, as Scout Climie's insertion pass came out to Montigny on the left side of the circle, where she instantly blasted a shot for the goal.

Westfield tied the game in the second quarter, as sophomore Sadie Stauffer (Suffield, Conn.) netted her first career goal for the Owls.

Westfield had a chance to equalize late in the game, getting the ball deep into the MHC end in the final two minutes, but a last ditch effort from the Owls got the ball deep in the circle but it was kicked away by Lyons goalkeeper Rachel Katzenberg as time expired.

Westfield slips to 2-1 on the season with the loss, while Mount Holyoke improves its record to 1-1.

The Owls will return to action on Saturday, playing at UMass Dartmouth on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. start.
