Smith Tips Owls Late in Newhof Championship Game

WESTFIELD, Mass.  –  Callahan Day's goal with 6:32 left in regulation proved to be the difference, as Smith College defeated Westfield State, 3-2 in the championship game of the Caryl Newhof Classic field hockey tournament at Smith in Northampton, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.

Westfield's record levels at 1-1 on the season, while Smith is now 2-0.  Owls midfielder Madison Oullette (Uxbridge, Mass.) and defender Morgan Wichmann (Granby, Conn.) were both named to the all-tournament team.

Smith jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second quarter, but Westfield got one back before the half when Bre Foley (South Hadley, Mass.) tallied her second goal in as many days with four seconds left in the half.

Westfield tied the game at 2-2 on Kaleigh Murphy's (Pembroke, Mass.) goal early in the fourth quarter, but Day tallied with an assist from Gracie Hylton to give the Pioneers the win and the tourney title.

Smith out-shot the Owls 23-10 in the match, but Westfield got 13 saves from Emma Gniadek to keep the game tight.  Rory Harper made seven saves for Smith.

Westfield State will be back in action on the road on Wednesday with a non-conference game at Mount Holyoke College.
