Owls Grounded by Castleton

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Castleton junior Emily Harris (Crondall, England) piled on three goals and two assists as the Spartans defeated Westfield State 8-1 in a Little East Conference game on Homecoming Weekend from Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass. on Saturday night.

Castleton snapped the Owls three-game winning streak, falling to 9-7 on the season and 6-4 in the LEC. The Spartans improve to 9-7 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

Castleton jumped out to an early lead just 2:07 into game action as Peyton Richardson (Windsor, Vt.) found Harris for her first of three goals to put the Spartans up 1-0. Harris would tack on a second goal towards the back end of the first period to double the Spartans lead.

Harris assisted in the third goal of the evening for Castleton, setting up Kaitlin Bardellini (Northfield, N.H.) for her 14th goal of the season in the second quarter to give the Spartans a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.

Haley Corlew (Granville, N.Y.) and Chance Jaquin (Canastota, N.Y.) extended the Spartans lead to five with a pair of goals four minutes apart.

The Owls cracked the scoreboard in the 44th minute, with Leah Pierce (Barnstable, Mass.) settling a bouncing ball in the box, then flipping it over the diving Zoe Martin (Haverhill, Mass.) for her third goal of the campaign.

Castleton reasserted themselves in the fourth quarter, registering three in the period including Harris' conference leading 28th goal of the year.

Bardellini tallied two goals and an assist with Richardson netting a goal and an assist.

Paige Reisman (Milford, Mass.) got the start in net for the Owls, recording ten saves. Martin compiled five saves in three quarters for Castleton.

Westfield State currently holds the seventh seed in the Little East Conference with two games remaining in the regular season. The Owls will host Salem State on Tuesday night in the final regular season home game from Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass. with a 7:00 P.M. start time. Westfield will finish the regular season on Saturday, October 29 at Keene State.
