Lancers Use Second-Half Surge to Push Past Owls

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State junior midfielder Corryn Moroney (Granby, Mass.) tallied the game's opening goal, but Worcester State used a three-goal second half to power past the Owls 3-1 in a Little East Conference match-up on a Tuesday night from Coughlin Field in Worcester, Mass.

The Owls suffer their first loss of the season in the LEC, falling to 2-1 in conference play and 5-4 overall. The Lancers advance to 6-3 on the year and 3-0 in the LEC.

In the 23' minute after a flurry of activity that saw Lancers goalkeeper Madison Ferrara (Somerset, Mass.) rack up a number of saves along with a defensive save from fellow defender Maggie Campion (Ashland, Mass.), the Owls broke through with Moroney netting her third goal of the season off a rebound to give Westfield an early 1-0 advantage.

The score would hold true into the second half of play where the Lancers answered in the 44' minute where a crisp pass from senior Karalyn Jones (Wilbraham, Mass.) was received by Zoe Athanasopoulos (Hopedale, Mass.) in the center of the circle who one timed the pass around Owls goalkeeper Paige Reisman (Milford, Mass.) for the equalizer.

Just five minutes later, senior Molly Cutting (Auburn, Mass.) sent in the game winning goal off a scramble in the circle. Each team put up a fight in the final quarter but Lancers junior Grace Adams (Leominster, Mass.) delivered an insurance goal for Worcester when she carried the ball down the left sideline into the circle and with a quick pull back on the ball sent it pounding into the backboard.

Worcester held a 27-9 shot advantage, including a 17-7 edge in shots on net. Reisman kept the game in the balance for the Owls, stopping a surge of opportunities to the tune of 14 saves in the contest, including nine in the first half where she was pitching a shutout at the time. Ferrara stopped five shots on net for Worcester.

The Lancers also held a lopsided advantage in penalty corners, attempting 15 to the Owls three.

Westfield State will remain in LEC play for the remainder of the season as the Owls will host Southern Maine on Saturday from Alumni Field at 2:00 PM.
