WESTFIELD, Mass. – Western New England's Sarah Johnston (Uxbridge, Mass.) scored one goal and assisted on another as the Golden Bears topped Westfield State, 3-0, in a non-conference field hockey game at Alumni Field on Thursday evening.
Western New England improves to 4-2 on the season while Westfield is now 5-3.
Johnston's pass up the left side sent Olivia Eastman (Holderness, N.H.) in on goal, and her shot from a flat angle appeared to deflect off an Owl defender's stick and inside the far post for a 1-0 Golden Bears lead 5:14 into the match.
Johnston scored the second goal of the night in the 20th minute, knocking in a loose ball about four yards in front of the goal after Westfield State goalie Paige Reisman (Mlford, Mass.) had saved the initial shot in the flurry.
Taylor Klesyk (Hamden, Conn.) tacked on an insurance goal in the third quarter.
Reisman finished with 10 saves on the evening, while WNE's Zoey Wexler (Manchester, Conn.) stopped five shots.
