WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State junior Emily Martin (Southwick, Mass.) scored a pair of first-quarter goals and added an assist as the Owls rolled past University of Maine Farmington, 6-0, on day two of the Cheryl Newof Classic at Smith College on Sunday. Martin was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance. Westfield picks up their first win of the 2022 season, moving to 1-1 on the year. Maine Farmington drops to 0-2.

The Owls jumped all over the Beavers from the start, with Martin tallying bookend goals on the opening and closing minutes of the period. First-year Meredith Higgins (Enfield, Conn.) continued where she left off yesterday, netting her second goal of the season off a feed from Skyla Harthcock (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) at the 6:18 mark, giving the Owls a 3-0 advantage after one quarter.

After a scoreless second period, sophomore Taylor Creech (Kennebunk, Maine) deposited her second goal in as many days early in the third to extend the Westfield lead to four. Senior Lindsey Spindel (Mendon, Mass.) and sophomore Leah Pierce (Barnstable, Mass.) both got on the scoreboard with fourth quarter goals to end an afternoon that saw relentless pressure from the Owls.

Not only did Westfield shutout Farmington in the game, but the Owls also held the Beavers without a shot in the sixty minutes of action. Westfield piled up 37 shots, with 27 of those directed on net. Maine Farmington goalkeeper Alicia Bridges (Livermore Falls, Maine) registered 21 saves, while Owls goalie Paige Reisman (Milford, Mass.) (1-1) picked up her first win of the 2022 campaign.

Westfield State will next play in the home opener of the season on Tuesday as the Owls will host Elms College from Alumni Field for a 7:00 P.M. start time.
