NORTHAMPTON, Mass. –   For the second day in a row, senior forward Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) netted the lone goal of the game for Westfield State, as the Owls fell to Nichols College, 3-1, in the consolation game of the Caryl Newhof Classic field hockey tournament at Smith College on Sunday morning.

Again the Owls (0-2) fell behind early, as the Bison got goals from Dana Edwards, Abagail Karalis, and Mackenzine Doran in the first half to take a 3-0 lead.

Westfield finally got on the board with less than three minutes left in the game, with Latona converting off an assist from senior Shannon Roycroft (Barnstable, Mass./Proctor Academy).

Roycroft was selected to the all-tournament team for her play this weekend.

Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass./Old Rochester) made four saves for the Owls. Sophia Venables stopped seven shots for Nichols (1-1).

Total shots were even at 10 for each team, but the Bison mustered nine penalty corners to the Owls' four.

Westfield will be back in action at Johnson and Wales University in Providence on Wednesday.
