Field Hockey Tripped By Castleton, 2-1

CASTLETON, Vt. -- After suffering two straight losses, the Castleton University field hockey team used two unanswered goals to bounced back Saturday afternoon as it came back to defeat Westfield State 2-1 at Dave Wolk Stadium.

The Owls (4-12, 1-8 LEC) jumped ahead of the Spartans (8-6, 6-3 LEC) early as Cheryl Latona scored from close range.

The Spartans received a spark off the bench in the second quarter as sophomore Raven Payne scored to tie the game up at one. On the penalty corner, junior Loretta Blakeney received a pass from freshman Kaitlin Bardellini and sent a pass into the striking circle. Payne was on the receiving end and tipped it in past goaltender Riley Goulet to score her second goal of the season.

With the score tied after halftime, the Spartans would strike next in the third quarter. After a scrum in front of the Owls' goal, the Spartans would take the lead at the 39:13 mark of the quarter. Gabriella Hunt found the back of the net and scored her 11th goal of the season.

Hunt's goal would turn out to be the game winner as defense was the highlight of the fourth quarter. Neither team was able to find the back of the net as the Spartans outshot the Owls 5-2 in the final quarter of play.
