Owls Triumphant on Senior Day, 4-0

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Westfield State sophomore Allie Giguere's (Lynn, Mass.) two goals helped lead the Owls over Bridgewater State, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The win snaps a five-game losing streak for Westfield, giving them their first conference win of the season. The Owls now stand at 1-3 in the Little East Conference (LEC) and 4-6 overall, while Bridgewater drops to 0-3 (0-7 overall).

Westfield State controlled much of the play on the afternoon, outshooting Bridgewater 23-3 and holding the advantage in penalty corners as well (11-4).

The Owls got on the board early in this one when Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) slid a pass to Marina Small (South Harwich, Mass.) in the high slot, who ripped a shot past the Bears goalkeeper to put Westfield up 1-0.

After the goal, it was all Owls as they spent nearly the entire second quarter in the offensive zone, firing 10 shots at the Bears net. Westfield connected on two of those shots, both times by Allie Giguere to put the Owls up 3-0 before the end of the half.

Giguere's first tally came off a rebound blast from Sophie Morini (Florence, Mass.) to which Giguere dove past the Bridgewater defender and tipped the ball into the net for the goal. Then only two minutes later, Giguere and Small would exchange a give and go sequence to set Giguere up for her second goal of the game and the three goal advantage.

Sophomore Rachel Anzivino (Rockport, Mass.) tacked on a goal of her own late in the third quarter to finish off the scoring for the afternoon.

Goalkeeper Katie Vamosi (Easton, Mass.) recorded her first shutout of the year, making three saves on the day.

Bridgewater State goalkeeper Jillian Delaney (Foxborough, Mass.) certainly kept the Bears in it all afternoon, making 10 saves in the losing effort.

The Bears next travel to Fitchburg State to take on the Falcons in an LEC matchup at 4:00 p.m.

Due to the EEE virus threat level, the next Westfield State game against Worcester State at Alumni Field has been moved up to 4:00 p.m.
