Field Hockey Wins Third Straight, Shuts Out Rivier, 1-0

NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier University field hockey team suffered a tough 1-0 loss this afternoon to visiting Westfield State University in a non-conference contest at the soon-to-be-named Joanne Merrill Field. The loss moves the Raiders' overall record to 0-2 while Owls improve to 3-1.

Both teams played well and were evenly matched throughout the length of the contest. Westfield State held the edge in shots (12-5) and corners (9-6) while the Raiders recorded two more saves (7-5).

Westfield State broke the scoreless tie in the first quarter. Sophomore Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) knocked home a pass from junior Abby Chernick (Longmeadow, Mass.) off a set corner play to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.

Rivier had several chances to tie the game in the second half however they were not able to capitalize on a couple of loose balls in front of the net.

Raider sophomore goalkeeper Katie Olsen (Saugus, Mass.) shined bright in net as she recorded seven saves on the afternoon. WSU sophomore goalkeeper Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass.) stopped all five of the shots she faced on net to earn her second consecutive shutout.

Next up for Rivier will be another non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon as they host New England College in a 4pm affair. Westfield State will also be in action at 4pm on Wednesday as they host Johnson & Wales University.
