Westfield State University peppered Johnson and Wales University with 25 shots on the evening, but the Wildcats managed the lone goal of the match in a 1-0 win over the Owls on Thursday evening in Providence.

Westfield falls to 2-4 with the loss, while JWU is now 1-2 on the season.

The Owls outshot the Wildcats, 25-15, but the first and only goal of the game was scored by Erin Esty in the first ten minutes. Esty was momentarily stopped on a breakaway Owls goalkeeper Katie Vamosi, but Esty picked up the ball off the clear attempt and ripped a hard shot from the top of the arc.

Westfield held a 12-6 margin in penalty corners, but JWU freshman goalkeeper Grace Pendergast nabbed her first shutout and career win with 11 saves.  Vamosi made seven saves for the Owls.

Westfield returns to conference play with a noon start against Western Connecticut at Alumni Field.
