WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Westfield State announced its 2019-20 Senior Scholar Athlete Awards on Monday evening in a digital presentation.

Senior swimmer Carly Thibodeau (Mendon, Mass.) earned the women's award, while middle-distance runner and football kicker Corey Pooler (Middleboro, Mass.) was named as the men's award winner.

The awards are presented to the male and female student athlete with the highest grade point averages in the senior class.

Thibodeau carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in Environmental Science and Economics, and was recently honored as with one of the state's "29 Who Shine Award." She served as a team captain and was the top butterfly swimmer on the Owls roster this season, placing 14th at the NEISDA championship meet.

She and Pooler were both honored with the University's "President's Award" in 2019.

Pooler has a 3.81 GPA in mathematics.  He walked on to the football team as a kicker as a sophomore and finished the 2019 season 24 of 27 on extra point tries and 3 for 3 on field goal tries.  He was also a member of the Owls winning 4x800 relay team at the 2020 MASCAC indoor track and field championships.

With students off campus for the spring semester due to the covid crisis, the athletic department awards will be unveiled nightly on WestfieldStateOwls.com and on the Owls social media channels from May 11 through 15.
