WESTFIELD, Mass. –   Westfield State University freshman running back Leesandro Colon (Holyoke, Mass.) was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference football rookie of the week, as sponsored by GEICO, for his performance in the Owls' game against Worcester State on Saturday, November 9.

In the Owls 38-15 win, Colon carried the ball 24 times for 194 yards and had a 23-yard touchdown run.  He also returned a pair of kickoffs for a 24.0-yard average.

Colon leads Westfield in rushing with 352 yards on 52 carries, and has scored four touchdowns.  It's the second time this season that he has earned the Rookie of the Week award.

Westfield State is 2-7 overall on the season and 2-5 in the MASCAC, but the Owls have won their last two games.

Three other Westfield State football players were named to the league's weekly honor roll.  Senior QB Andrew Peltier (Holyoke, Mass.) threw a pair of TD passes and rushed for two more in the win over Worcester State.    Senior linebacker Joseph Mazotta (Norwood, Mass.) made 14 tackles in the win, while kicker Corey Pooler (Middleboro, Mass.) was perfect on the day with five extra points and a 25-yard field goal.

The Owls will play their final game of the 2019 season next Saturday, November 16, hosting UMass Dartmouth at Noon at Alumni Field.
