Five Owls Named to MASCAC Spring Sportsmanship Team

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Five Westfield State athletes were recognized as a part of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) 2020 Spring Sportsmanship Team which encompassed the sports of baseball, softball, women's lacrosse, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.

Senior Jake Gibb (Stoughton, Mass.) represented the Owl's baseball team in the awards. Gibb wrapped out a double and a home run, while adding three runs scored and three rbi's in the shortened 2020 season.

Sam Donohoe (Pepperell, Mass.) led the women's lacrosse team to a hot 4-1 start and a 16-12 victory over #20 Illinois-Wesleyan before the season came to an end. The senior was on pace for a record-breaking season, as she tallied 22 goals in her five games played.

Senior Alexandra Czarkosky (Cheshire, Conn.) hit .333 over the course of softball's eight contests this season. Czarkosky grabbed a pair of hits, including a double in the 9-1 win over Juniata in what would be the last game the Owls played for the spring.

Track and field seniors Riley Moore (Holden, Mass.) and Lauren Gilderdale (Great Barrington, Mass.) were not able to compete for the spring outdoor season, as all events were eventually cancelled. But both individuals were impressive throughout the indoor season, as Moore took second place in the pole vault at the MASCAC championships and Gilderdale was the DIII New England women's weight throw champion, poised to make a run in the National Championship meet before the season was cut short.

The MASCAC Sportsmanship Team is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the values of the MASCAC and its Sportsmanship Statement, regardless of their overall performance or statistics for the season.
